Breck vs Marshall HS

St. Paul, MN - The 2012-13 State High School Hockey tournament opened with a convincing yet well earned 6-1win for the Breck Mustangs over the Marshall High School Tigers on Wednesday morning as six different Mustangs scored in the winning effort.
With a quick pace, the tournaments second seeded Mustangs went after the disciplined Marshall High School Tigers, who were making their first appearance.
Tiger goalie Mason Campion was under siege from the opening face-off as he faced 20 Mustang shots yet, kept his team close after one period as they trailed 3-0 after one period.
Three different players scored for Breck (25-3-1) as David Husband opened the scoring at 2:01 of the first period. Thomas Lindstrom and Michael Orke rounded out the goal scoring for the Mustangs in period one.
After Breck's Derek Wiitala took a penalty for cross checking, the Tigers (14-11-1) went to work on the power play. As the man advantage expired Jeremiah Barker redirected a pass from the left corner by Derek Rasmussen as he tipped it through the five-hole of Mustang goalie Henry Johnson to pull his team within two at 3-1.
While the Tigers neatly fended off the Breck offensive surge for much of the second period, Chase Ellingson became the games fourth goal scorer as he cleaned up a rebound off the left pad of Campion. The original shot was taken by Otto Haeg at 11:35.
Campion responded with two terrific saves one off a partial breakaway and another quick glove from short range. Through two period he had 29 saves to his credit has his teams was outshot 33-14 after two periods.
While the Mustangs took territorial control much of the game, they were not able to dent the twine until Lucas McCormick scored at the 6:00 mark of the first period. Max Schwartzman tallied the games last goal from Parker Montgomery at 16:43 of the third period as they hooked up on a short handed effort beating Marshall goalie Adam Cavzos as he entered the game's final :45 seconds.
Breck moves on to play in the Class A semi-finals Friday while the Tigers will pay at Mariucci Arena in the consolation round on Thursday.
